After submission, applicants follow a five-step assessment process. Find below an overview diagram, then detailed information of the CEnvP Scheme’s certification processes.
An Overview of the Five-step Certification Process
The Certification Process In Detail.
Upon submission, the Program Office review the application to confirm that the applicant complies with the minimum requirements for certification and that the application is complete, including references and work verification reports.
Registrar assesses the application materials to determine whether the applicant has demonstrated the knowledge, skills and experience required for certification and has submitted sufficient evidence to satisfy the competencies criteria.
For specialisations, all Registrar are suitably experienced in that certification type.
The Registrar may:
-
- approve the application to progress to the Panel Assessment
- request additional information if the application is not considered properly made
- reject the application if the applicant is unable to demonstrate the required level of experience, skills, and competencies.
There is no right of appeal against the decision of the Registrar.
Once application has been approved by the Registrar, the Program Office arrange for the applicant to be interviewed by a Panel of three CEnvPs via video conference.
For specialisations, all Panellists are suitably experienced in that certification type.
At the assessment interview, all applicants are asked questions relating to overall experience, commitment to continuous professional development and ethical conduct. For specialisations, applicants are asked directly on their experience and competence for that field. Further, for Site Contamination Specialist certification, applicants will also be given a case study to review and be assessed on during the interview.
Following the interview, the Panel recommend certification, deferral, or rejection of the application.
A rotating subcommittee of the Board individually review application materials, assessment reports and processes in detail, and provide their recommendations.
A resolution is made by a Board majority to endorse the BARC recommendations for certification, deferral, or rejection of the application.
Successful applicants will receive a CEnvP certificate and a personalised CEnvP seal to use. You will be entitled to use the title ‘Certified Environmental Practitioner’ and the post-nominal letters ‘CEnvP’ as follows: Mr/s Alex Doe BSc CEnvP. See the trademark page for more information.
Unsuccessful applications can be either deferred for a period no longer than 12 months or rejected.
Unsuccessful applicants will receive an outcome letter from the Board addressing their decision and shortcomings identified during the application process. Applicants can either accept the decision of the Board or appeal through the appeals process.
- Applicants whose applications have been deferred may reapply once they have fulfilled the deferral period and any requirements specified by the Certification Board, without needing to submit a new application or pay an additional fee. Please note that a second deferral is not permitted, and the deferral period, outlined in your outcome notification, is limited to a maximum of 12 months.
- Applicants whose applications have been rejected may apply again once the skills shortcomings have been addressed, but not earlier than a year after rejection. A new application will need to be submitted in full and paying the corresponding application fee.
- Applicants whose certification or re-certification application is rejected may appeal the decision to a Certification Appeal Committee.
- The Certification Board will notify applicants in writing of its decision, the reasons for rejection, and the process to lodge an appeal within 28 days.
- The Program Office will provide instructions for submitting an appeal, including required documentation, fees, and the date of the hearing.
- Appeal hearings will be scheduled no less than 28 days after the notice of appeal is submitted.
- The Certification Appeal Committee will review all evidence, consider the original decision, and either uphold or overturn it.
- The decision of the Certification Appeal Committee is final and replaces the Certification Board’s decision.
- Applicants may withdraw their appeal at any time by notifying the Program Office via email.
Your certification will be reviewed on a two-year basis. To maintain CEnvP status, certified practitioners will need to provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and a statement verifying any changed circumstances including employment and ethical conduct.
